Though the incident’s specifics are still being worked out, a witness who spoke with the BBC said he tried to notify the U.S. Secret Service and the police about a possible sniper on a neighboring roof. Agents extensively inspect the location before every event to look for explosives and other threats, and Trump usually arrives in a heavily guarded motorcade. Violence plagued the Butler gathering despite these efforts.

The shooter’s death was confirmed by a representative of the Secret Service.
